The leather is really what needs to be conditioned so it doesn't crack.
As for LV refusing to repair bags with damaged canvas, I found this to be untrue myself. They actually accepted my Speedy for a zipper replacement and it wasn't an issue at all. As for the holes in the corner, nobody notices them at all unless you point them out. It looks so much nicer with your leather strap - I wish they'd just given us that one instead of the other.
